MOSS 2007- Adventure Begins

The SharePoint community has been excited, since the news came down from Redmond of plans to upgrade SPS 2003 from a platform for enterprise collaboration to an integrated vision of making MOSS 2007 ( Microsoft Office SharePoint Server ) central to Office 2007 and other MS applications and incorporate a host of new features to give new meaning to the word often misused Enterprise Wide Platform. So what are the features beyond SPS 2003 .

All the features we wanted and we did not get in SPS 2003, content management, records management, workflow, business intelligence and excel services and a forms server too and for good measure BDC, (Business Data Catalogue )that will define applications and enable MOSS 2007 to communicate with all the LOB systems. The sharepoint administration has been brought under one roof and you have capability to turn on and off features. It is a new adventure that MOSS 2007 offers for sharepoint community.

Some features that were missing in SPS 2003 now come as standard out of the box in MOSS 2007, Numbered versioning, major, minor, forced Document check Out, Item level security,Offline doc library, a recycle bin and more importantly for the end user a number of Webparts.

According to Ian Morish To MOSS or not to MOSS web parts may be the answer. For a complete listing of the webparts in MOSS 2007 see his blog Ian Morish

The new features that excite the on line community in MOSS 2007 is support for RSS,wikis, blogs. Now you have a site template that you can use to create your blog site/wiki in MOSS 2007. You are a fan of blogs and wikis and want to know more see the Channel 9 MSDN Forum, it is 55 minutes long- You have been warned.
